Inspired by the Stage: LTYC Theatre Scholars Experience Powerful Storytelling at Coppin State University
At Leaders of Tomorrow Youth Center (LTYC), we believe in the transformative power of the arts to inspire, educate, and uplift. Recently, our Theatre Scholars from H.D. Woodson STEM High School had the incredible opportunity to visit Coppin State University in Baltimore to witness a powerful performance of Marty and the Hands That Could by playwright Josh Wilder.
This experience not only captivated our students but also motivated them to push their creative boundaries and strive for excellence in their own artistic journeys.
Marty and the Hands That Could tell a moving story of resilience and determination, themes that resonated deeply with our scholars. Through the brilliance of Josh Wilder’s writing and the actors’ heartfelt performances, the play offered a masterclass in the emotional depth and transformative potential of theatre.
Our students were inspired by the play’s themes and its demonstration of how art can bring critical conversations to life. For Josh, one of our dedicated Theatre Scholars, the experience was a catalyst to work harder on his own craft—particularly his Fences monologue, where he plans to channel the energy and authenticity he witnessed on stage.
The visit to Coppin State University was about more than just the performance. It was an opportunity for our scholars to envision their own futures in the arts, including the possibility of pursuing higher education in creative disciplines. They explored the university’s vibrant arts community and saw firsthand how passion and dedication can lead to success in college arts programs and beyond.
At LTYC, we are committed to creating moments like this—experiences that challenge, inspire, and broaden the horizons of our youth. By exposing our scholars to professional performances and real-world examples of artistic excellence, we help them envision what’s possible for their own lives through theatre arts education.
For many of our students, opportunities like this provide the encouragement they need to dream big and take bold steps toward achieving their goals, whether on stage, behind the scenes, or in other aspects of life through creative youth programs.
